Netanya, Nazareth and Mount Sinai

Last Wednesday it all came together.  180 Shuvu students and their parents  from our Netanya School celebrated Shavuot, the holiday that commemorates the Torah giving on Mount Sinai, in the Gardenia Hotel in Nazareth.  The theme was “A Successful Marriage and Successfully Educating Children”.    Rabbi Keinan, co-coordinator of the event and director of  Tzohar, was amazed at how receptive the parents were to learn about their Jewish Heritage. It was clear to him that Shuvu’s schools had a significant impact on the parents’ spiritual quest.  By the time it was over we were all bursting with pride as each family made a personal commitment to observe a specific mitzvah (commandment). These are some of the seminars heroic parents:

Shura, a young mother,  shared why she had chosen to send her child to a Shuvu School.  ”You know why I sent my son to Shuvu?  Because my cousin is a librarian in the Netanya Public Library and she told me that even when there are 300 children in the library she can always determine which are Shuvu students.  Their behavior is exceptional!”

Mikhael walked up to the podium and made his personal commitment: “My girlfriend and I have decided to have a Jewish marriage”.

Natasha came to the closing event determined to adhere to a long term commitment to the Laws of Family Purity.

Iliya declared that his mornings will now begin with Tefillin (phylacteries).  From now on, he would don Tefillin daily and start his day with this special commandment.

Svetlana lamented that only her younger daughter  merited to attend a Shuvu school and begged the staff to recommend a school for her older daughter that would instill Jewish Heritage just like Shuvu does.

Marina insisted on speaking to Rabbi Gutterman, Shuvu’s devoted director.  ”I know we have just attended a seminar and there are thousands of parents waiting to attend future seminars, but I beg you, please please coordinate additional seminars for our group.  We are craving for more!”

We couldn’t have summed it up better.  All the Shuvu parents left the seminar asking to learn more.  More about their Jewish Heritage, more about mitzvah observance and more about  how G-d wants them to lead their lives as Jewish families.

Tammy’s Masua

Tammy, Lena and Babushka Bella

By Brocha Weinberger

Educational Supervisor

It all started with Tammy.  Tammy was my heroine, she came to our Ashdod school every morning to learn and in the afternoon went home and assumed the role of teacher.  She delighted in sharing her newly discovered Jewish Heritage with her parents and grandmother.  Under  her tutelage, Tammy’s father, a dentist by profession, began to observe mitzvot and her mother and grandmother began to light Shabbat candles.

I couldn’t let this opportunity pass.  I had to commemorate the three generation’s re-connecting to their Jewish Heritage with a memorable event.  I wanted to do it for Tammy, for her parents and grandmother, and for the other young “teachers” at Shuvu who  were introducing their Jewish Heritage to their parents.

Until Tammy Natanilov was Bat Mitzva our girls celebrated their 12th birthday in their local school.  I decided that this was a lost opportunity for empowerment.  I immediately scheduled a national Bat Mitzva event for the 300 Shuvu girls to celebrate together.

The theme that year was “our mothers”.  We invited Tammy’s mother and grandmother to come on to the stage to light a “Masua” (beacon). This was the highlight of the celebration.  We all looked on as Babushka Bella handed the lamp over to her daughter Lena, and then Lena handed the lamp over to her daughter Tammy.

Today, Tammy is married and raising her daughter in a home saturated with Jewish Heritage and mitzvot. Tammy is proud to share that her commitment to Judaism was inspired as she kindled the lamp on stage. It was such an emotional moment. She felt hundreds of eyes watching her, she knew she had to live up to their expectations.  Her family’s expectations and Shuvu’s expectations. She had the responsibility of sotering the link in the chain of the continuity of her Jewish Heritage among Russian immigrants who never even knew what they had.  She couldn’t disappoint them.  And she didn’t.

Tammy’s Bat Mitzva was seven years ago.  We have been celebrating Bar and Bat Mitzva events annually for 500 Shuvu students with a festive national event just like we did for the Natanilov family.

Anya’s Passover Seder

Our high school girls learning to lead a Passover Seder

PASSOVER 2011

Anya’s father didn’t let her organize a Passover Seder at home.  Fearing his wrath, she waited up until after he was fast asleep to celebrate the special Jewish Holiday.  When silence prevailed, she agilely slipped behind the curtain and settled on the window sill to conduct her seder under the glow of the Acco street lights.   She melodiously sang through the Russian Haggadah, drank wine and ate matzot exactly as she had observed at Shuvu’s model seder.

Pleased with her success Anya conducted her seder the following year at the same time and place.  When her sister was old enough to join her and there wasn’t enough place on the window sill, she led the seder on the porch.  Proud of her heritage and unwavering in her commitment to Judaism, Anya has not missed a seder in years!

Anya is just one of our students who would not know how to conduct a seder nor have the basic Passover foods without our annual model seder and our food allocation (this year distributed to over 6,000 families).  Despite their young ages it is essential for Shuvu children to learn how to conduct a seder since most of them lead the seder for their parents.  It is the parents who ask the questions, and the children who provide the answers.  With only a rare exception, parents are usually happy to cooperate with their children who fill their homes with rich Jewish tradition.

This Passover Shuvu added handmade matza to the food packages.  Many of the students had never tasted this type of matza and it was very a special treat for them!

At our Lod School students were elated to go home with their all-inclusive Passover package.  As they left for the holiday vacation they told our principal, Mrs. Michal Huminer, “Hurray! We are so excited, now we’ll be able to have Matza on Passover!”

Vote of Confidence

Dr. Tzameret (center) with his team. A traffic safety campaign placard seen in background.

Dr. Tzvi Tzameret never got such a welcome.  As Director of Pedagogic Affairs in the Ministry of Education, he has visited scores of classrooms but the classic Shuvu students’ greeting resounding in each classroom with the children rising from their chairs and calling out  ”We welcome the important guests” -was a first.

Dr. Tzameret’s visit was initiated by Dr. Weil, Director of The Bracha Foundation and a sponsor of Shuvu’s unique “Waterford” program.

This computerized program is designed to teach math, science and English as a second language.  The language program focuses on vocabulary, grammar and American dialect.

The visitors were amazed at the effective results of the “Waterford” program, the high level of general studies and the exceptional behavior of the students.  Shuvu’s success with discipline distinguished its schools from Israeli public schools where discipline is failing. While observing a mathematics class, Dr. Tzameret was so mesmerized that he had to literally be pulled out of the classroom to continue the tour.

As he completed his tour, Dr. Tzameret announced that he would consider recommending “Waterford” for all schools in Israel.  Additionally, in a vote of confidence in Shuvu, after his visit he approved two Shuvu schools (Lod and Netanya) as “Experimental Schools“.  These schools are monitored by the Ministry to determine how they achieve outstanding results.  The Ministry is then able to implement these successful models into other schools throughout Israel.
